Canadian Kurds marked the 68th Anniversary of the Kurdistan Republic

DSC03563According to the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan- Eastern-Canada Committee, a commemoration ceremony for the 68th anniversary of the Establishment of the Kurdistan Republic was held in Mississauga, Canada on the 25th of January, 2014.

Sara Akrami and Kajal Mohammadi opened the event by welcoming guests, delegates, members and supporters of the Party in English and Kurdish, respectively.

The event started with the Kurdish national anthem, performed by the Kirmashan Choir Group. It was followed by a moment of silence to honour the martyred peshmergas. Opening statements were joint messages from Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan(PDKI-Eastern-Canada Committee) and Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KPIK-Northern America Committee) presented by Mr. Helmat Mohammadi in Kurdish and Mr. Zakarya Khezeryan presented the English version of the message.

A number of political parties, leaders and dignitaries had conveyed special greetings on the occasion.  The Honourable Thomas Mulcair, the Leader of the Official Opposition in Canada conveyed a special greeting. Part of his message read: “This day marks a significant milestone in your fight for Kurdish national rights in Iran. New Democrats share your vision of an Iran where nations founded on the principles of democracy, social justice and gender equality can co-exist peaceably.”

“I would also like to commend the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan for your tireless efforts to highlight human rights violations of Kurdish activists. By engaging with international partners you are building lasting relationships based on mutual respect which will help create a more secure future for the generations that follow you.” His message concluded.

The Honourable Jim Karygiannis, Liberal M.P. for Scarborough-Agincourt also conveyed a greeting message: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Canadians of Kurdish heritage as they mark the 68th Anniversary of the Founding of the Kurdistan Republic.” The message read.

In a special note, the Honourable Reza Moridi, Liberal MPP for Richmond Hills wished the Kurdish community an enjoyable and successful event.

In another segment of the event, Mr. Amir Shoaiband laid out the details of a campaign to raise funds for refugees from Western Kurdistan, who are forced to migrate to other parts of the region, due to the Syrian Civil War.

Other parts of the program consisted of a draw and the winners were presented with cash, a book and several Kurdish flags.

The most enjoyable segment of the night was the delightful music by the honorary guest performer Mr. Xero Abbas, who had come from Germany, along with other local performers Sharuz, Galawezh, Foad, Kazim, Adnan and Jiwan; where the crowds danced traditional Kurdish dances until the end of the event.

Similar events were held in Vancouver BC, Washington DC, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, UK and several cities in Kurdistan Region in Iraq.
